Penstemon Alice Hindley |
|
|
This is probably my favorite penstemon of all time. A very showy Penstemon, this tall erect plant may need to be given a stake if it is sited in a windy border. Growing to approximately 4ft (120cm) it is the only large pale mauve flower in the Penstemon World. The flower has an open white throat with the upper corolla of lilac fading to white in the lower tube. Likes an open sunny position with good drainage and is fairly drought tolerant. Flowering Season: Mid July to the first frosts (although it has been known to survive even a mild frost). Alice Hindley is one of the few penstemons which does not require too much cutting back. Cut back the seed heads when the flowers have gone over and leave the foliage to protect the new shoots from the frosts. Cut back to about one third of the growth in late spring. You will probably need to discard the original plant after a couple of years as the base becomes very woody. |
